Buying labels through Monta

Monta is a Dutch fulfilment company whose shipping service, MontaShip, connects carriers such as PostNL, DHL, DPD, GLS, UPS, and FedEx. Connect it to Scanpacker and you can buy labels through MontaShip from the carriers Monta has approved for your account, while you pick and pack the orders yourself.

This guide covers what’s specific to Monta. For the shipping workflow itself, see Shipping label purchase.

Monta support is in beta. If you’d like to use it, email support@scanpacker.com and we’ll help you get set up.

Setting up

Your Monta contact gives you a username and an API key. Monta also needs to approve each carrier you want to use on your account.

  1. In Scanpacker, go to Settings → Shipping Labels and choose Monta.
  2. Enter your Monta username and API key.
  3. Click Save Changes.

Scanpacker loads the carriers Monta has approved for you as soon as you save, so you can choose your default services straight away. Carriers that deliver only to pickup points are left out, because Shopify orders don’t tell Scanpacker which pickup point a customer chose.

Monta doesn’t say which of its carriers ship abroad, so every carrier is offered as both a domestic and an international default. Choose an international default that delivers to the countries you ship to.

Buying a label

Buying works the same as with any other platform: set the parcel size and weight, fetch rates or pick a preferred service, and buy. A few things are specific to Monta:

  • One rate per carrier. Monta returns delivery options rather than a quote for your parcel, so Scanpacker shows the cheapest option for each carrier.
  • Prices are Monta’s delivery option prices. They’re not worked out from the parcel’s size and weight, so what Monta charges may differ.
  • The parcel needs a weight. Scanpacker won’t buy a Monta label for a parcel weighing nothing.
  • Each label creates an order in Monta. It’s a drop-ship order named after the Shopify order with a short code added, such as 1001-X7K2QP, so a second label for the same order never clashes with the first. If something goes wrong partway through, Scanpacker deletes that order again.

Scanpacker uses the first sender (webshop) set up on your Monta account.

Labels and printing

Monta labels are PDFs. They print with the 4x6 Shipping Label (PDF) print type, so make sure that print type has a label printer on each station.

International shipments

Scanpacker doesn’t yet send customs details to Monta. Before you ship outside the EU, check with Monta how customs paperwork is handled for your account.

Things to watch out for

Cancelling a label. Scanpacker doesn’t cancel labels. To cancel one, contact Monta.

Carrier options. Options such as signature on delivery aren’t sent from Scanpacker yet. If you need them, buy that label through Monta directly.
